Vintage pennants were made by many different companies over the years, each using their own materials and printing methods. The construction details we share reflect what’s typical for each era, but individual pennants may vary in texture, thickness, or print style due to manufacturer differences and age. These variations are part of what make each piece unique! 

Pennant Construction & Era Guide 

1910s–1930s

• Material: Heavy wool felt
  
  

• Printing: Sewn or appliqué letters; sometimes chain-stitched
  
  

• Notes: Early handmade or small-batch production; thick, stiff wool; rich, deep dyes
  
  

1940s–1950s

• Material: Wool felt
  
  

• Printing: Screen-printed or flocked lettering
  
  

• Notes: Lighter, softer wool; many marked by companies like Collegiate Pacific or Chicago Pennant Co.
  
  

1960s–1970s

• Material: Wool/poly blend felt
  
  

• Printing: Screen-printed graphics and logos
  
  

• Notes: Bright inks, souvenir and college themes common; edges pinked or cut clean
  
  

1970s–1980s 

• Material: Stiff wool-polyester blend felt
  
  

• Printing: Bold screen-printed graphics, often multi-color
  
  

• Texture: Firm and slightly glossy surface; holds shape well
  
  

• Edge Finish: Usually pinked or straight-cut edges
  
  

• Notes: Transition era between traditional wool and full synthetic felt. Common for sports teams, travel souvenirs, and college pennants. Colors tend to remain vibrant; stiffer feel than earlier soft wool styles.

1980s–1990s

• Material: Polyester felt or synthetic blend
  
  

• Printing: Screen print or heat transfer
  
  

• Notes: Thinner, flexible felt; vivid licensed sports or travel designs
  
  

2000s–Present

• Material: Acrylic or polyester felt
  
  

• Printing: Digital or sublimation print
  
  

• Notes: Smooth synthetic surface; licensed reproduction or custom designs
